Covid-19: Advice for pet owners

Veterinary Ireland has issued a series of recommendations to pet owners to prevent the spread of Covid-19. These are precautions to be followed when seeking the attention of a vet for a pet.

They stated that the following precautions are to protect people and that there is no evidence of Covid-19 being able to infect animals.

Precautions

Veterinary activities have been designated as essential and therefore they will continue their practices during the current pandemic, but certain precautions have been put in place to protect the people involved.

  1. Make an appointment online or over the phone;
  2. Before going to the vet, call for advice;
  3. See the vet only for urgent procedures;
  4. Only one healthy adult should accompany the vet;
  5. After arrival, wait outside and follow the instructions of the staff;
  6. Disinfect your hands when entering if disinfectant is at your disposal;
  7. Avoid contact (no handshaking) and keep at least 2 metres from other people at all times;
  8. Try not to touch anything in the waiting room or consulting room;
  9. Contactless payment is preferred;
  10. Don’t forget to wash your hands properly and often.
