A farm in Crick, Northamptonshire has found an alternative way to cover its silage pit to protect it from birds and debris.
In a statement on Facebook, Henry’s Beef said: “Has anybody noticed a funky smell walking past our farm in Crick? We’ve topped our silage with waste oranges!”
“This is in an effort to reduce our plastic use; usually we would seal our clamped silage with a cling film-like plastic sheet followed by another black plastic sheet and then held down with tyres...this year... just oranges!”
“Not only does this provide a great seal for the silage, it also offers an additional fibre source for the cows! Win-win!” the statement concluded.
