Gardaí stopped a vehicle towing a “dangerous” unsecured load.

A motorist is set for a date in court after they were stopped by Gardaí over the weekend for transporting an unsecured load.

The detection was made by Laois Roads Policing on Saturday, August 7th.

In a post on social media, a spokesperson for Garda Síochána Laois/Offaly said: “Laois Roads Policing on patrol this evening stopped a vehicle towing a dangerous unsecured load. A Summons to court will be issued to this driver.”

Load security

Unsecured or inadequately secured loads pose a safety risk and could cause injury and even death.

Failure to secure loads properly may also result in financial losses due to damaged goods and vehicles, lost working time, clean-up costs and legal costs, the RSA stressed.

It reminded motorists that loads must be secured even if the vehicle is only travelling a short distance or at low speeds.

The RSA pointed out that load security is not just the sole responsibility of the vehicle driver— employers, vehicle owners, drivers and loading and unloading staff all have a role to play in ensuring loads are secure.

It outlined the importance of securing loads:

  • As well as being a distraction to the driver, shifting loads can make the vehicle unstable, result in loss of control of the vehicle and may cause the vehicle to overturn;

  • Unsecured loads or objects may fall on or hit people and can cause road obstructions, traffic disruptions and collisions especially if drivers swerve to avoid fallen items;

  • Certain vehicle spillages may cause other vehicles to skid and lose control;

  • Unrestrained goods may crash into the vehicle cab during emergency braking;

  • Loads which have shifted may have to be manually removed from the vehicle which may increase the risk of an injury or a fall from the vehicle.
