Kanturk Mart was packed to the rafters where cattle dealers; buyers; Agri companies, and people from all corners of the country flocked to the 'Rearing For Rickie' auction, which kicked off at 7 p.m.
The generosity of the buyers of the cattle; buyers of auction items; raffle tickets and donations on the night exceeded over a golden €70,000 for 'The Rickie Healy Appeal'. 68 cattle including calves; weanlings and older animals went under the hammer on the night.
Auctioneering duties were left in the capable hands of the Minister For Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed and he sold two pedigree Limousin heifers sponsored by Rickie’s uncles and reared on the family farm by Rickie’s Dad which fetched €1,500 and €1,750, respectively.
At a half-time interval, world-renowned musician Liam O’ Connor who has been on tour with Michael Flatley in Lord of the Dance, played for close to an hour and left the mart with an electric atmosphere. All companies who sponsored 'Rearing For Rickie' had a stand at the event and were there to watch their animals being sold, the support from these companies was the backbone of this fundraising project.
After the entertainment, there was a range of other auction lots where we saw a pair of Ed Sheeran tickets sold for €470; a morning on the gallops with Henry DeBromhead sold for €500; a picture from Coolmore sold for €560 and the sale topper was a signed Irish Jersey by the Grand Slam winning team which sold for €2,120 to Tim Sheehan of Farmco Agritrading!
Speaking to That’s Farming, Organiser, Caroline O' Connell said:
"After Rickie's accident last year I started this fundraising project with the help of my Dad Tim, auctioneer in Kanturk Mart, and we are overwhelmed by how much our expectations were surpassed. The support we received from the agricultural industry is phenomenal, without the support from the sponsor companies and the farmers this would not have been possible.”
“We would like to thank everybody who helped us 'Raise For Rickie', and as stated by Minister Creed it is heartening to see that the rural community spirit is alive and well,” Caroline explained.
The funds raised from the 'Rearing For Rickie' auction are just a drop in the ocean of the funds that will be needed for his long-term recovery and care. If you would like to make a contribution please contact Caroline on 0861916117.
