Cavan-based vet Gerard McGovern was recently presented with a case involving a deformed Hereford-cross calf, born to a Friesian cow.
In a post on his Instagram account – which has more than 29,000 followers – McGovern said: “[The calf was] born with skeletal deformities, including arthrogryposis (fusion/ankylosis of joints), a cleft in his spinal column, possibly as a result of his mother being affected with Schmallenberg virus."
"To compound his misery, he was also born with an omphacoele (umbilical fissure) & protrusion of his abdominal organs.”
“Although alive at birth, his deformities were incompatible with life and he was euthanased soon after birth.” The vet concluded.
