This years award for the "Best-ever" EU LIFE project went to Ireland's BurrenLIFE project.

The BurrenLIFE project has just been announced as a winner of the European commission’s “best-Ever” award.

The BurrenLife project not only won the award but now, as a result, will be recognised as the best ever LIFE project in the programmes 25-year history. The award was achieved in the

Biodiversity category of the competition.

The award will be presented to the project teams during Green Week at the Green awards in Brussels.

The Green awards, a special edition of the Life awards, was set up to highlight projects who have had remarkable effects on the natural environment, who have created green jobs and boosted

green growth.

To date the LIFE initiative has pumped over €3billion into projects across Europe. This is since its setting up 25 years ago.

The European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, said of the awards "A quarter century is a long time, and over that time LIFE has funded more than

4 000 projects to the tune of over €3 billion.” Before adding that the awards are a symbol of the Commissions appreciation to the projects conservation efforts , “appreciation for the efforts of

thousands, the hard work and dedication of everyone who has contributed to the programme as a whole".

The ceremony was attended by project members from all across the EU, and for the BurrenLife project to be recognised with such high competition is fantastic. In attendance were

representatives from local authorities, government agencies, educational institutions, students, private companies, NGOs and volunteers
