BSE DRIVE DOWN PRICE
After the confirmation of a BSE case in County Louth, farmers cannot allow this to be used an excuse to drive down prices. This week prices have strengthened, with supplies tightening and factories finding it harder to get supplies. In addition, farmers themselves having been looking for more. Moreover, prices in Britain and Northern Ireland have gone up this week to also.
Farmers need to be strong and not let processors use this isolated case of BSE as a factor to reduce prices on farmers. The impact of this case will have little or no effect on the Irish exports. Not only should it not affect exports, it should not affect the farm gate prices either. Farmers cannot take this as an excuse for processors dropping the prices.
