According to the Department of Agriculture, a suspected BSE case has been identified on a Co Louth Dairy Farm.
This is the first reported case of BSE found in Ireland, since 2013.
The case was identified through the department's ongoing investigations of animals that die on farms. The suspected animal in question, was sent for slaughter and did not enter the food chain.
The results from the tests undertaken, are expected to be known in the coming week.
If the results are positive, then Ireland's status as a negligible risk, which they received from the World Organisation for Animal Health would be required to change.
