Brothers from farm family die in diving tragedy

Two brothers, who hail from a farm family in Co. Laois, were killed in a diving incident over the weekend.

The tragedy occurred at Portoe Dive Centre at Portroe Quarry in Co. Tipperary at approximately 1:30pm yesterday (Sunday, July 5th).

It is understood that the two males were diving when they got into difficulty. 

Their bodies were removed to Limerick University Hospital where post-mortems will be conducted.

The victims have been named as 42-year-old Fergus Brophy, and his 34-year-old brother, Philip, both understood to be experienced scuba-divers.

According to media reports, one of the men got into difficulty in the water. The other sibling raised the alarm before entering the water to try to help, however, both drowned.

Garda, along with the Coast Guard services attended the scene of the incident.
