Its long been talked about but British PM Teresa May has announced that she will officially trigger article 50 next week the BBC has reported.
The news comes on the back of a tumultuous few weeks in British politics with Scotland announcing its plans to have a second independence referendum and Northern Ireland enjoying a Sinn Fein landslide.
The moves comes 9 months after the UK referendum to leave the EU was passed by 51.9%.
May will officially notify the EU of its exist and an EU spokesman has said it was ‘ready and waiting’ for the letter.
As part of the Article 50 process talks on the terms of the UK’s exit and future relations with the EU can not take place until the triggering has taken place.
