Name: Michael Danagher
Location: Errill, Co. Laois
Enterprise: Pedigree Charolais herd with a number of commercial breeding females with 60% Shorthorn blood and some Charolais and Belgian-Blue influence. 60% of progeny are finished on-farm.
We weaned 25 Hereford calves; they were dosed and moved to our out-farm where they will get grass from now on.
We purchased an additional 25 weaned Friesian bull calves along with 5 Charolais-types; we also bought two Charolais heifers which are being fed milk twice-a-day.
Three 6-week-old Friesian bull calves also joined the herd; they are getting fed once-a-day.
We spread dung on ground; it will be reseeded at the weekend. We dehorned more of our suckler calves and dosed the cows.
We closed off some more fields for silage; fertiliser was spread using a bulk spreader to save time.
We are still fixing fences around the farm and are replacing stakes that have been broken since the animals were turned out.
We are clearing off ground for a new 3-span machinery shed; the current building is being turned into a bedding shed for the upcoming winter.
