Beef Trade: Base price stuck in gear

The base price for steers and heifers remained unchanged again this week.

€3.60/kg is being quoted for in-spec stock, with reports of an additional 5c/kg being paid in some processing plants.

In terms of young bulls, €3.60/kg is being quoted for U grades, while €3.50/kg is being offered or R grades and €3.40/kg for O grades in a selective number of factories.

Again, cull cow prices are hovering around the €3.10/kg for Rs, with €2.85-€3.00/kg for O grades and in the region of €2.75/kg for P grades.   

National beef kill

The national beef kill for the week commencing June 22nd stood at 37,329 (including 37 calves), according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s database.

Last week’s throughput:

  • Young bulls: 2,907;
  • Bulls: 683;
  • Steers: 13,670;
  • Cows: 9,163;
  • Heifers: 10,869.
  • Total: 37,329 (includes 37 calves).

Corresponding week in 2019:

  • Young bulls: 4,889
  • Bulls: 919;
  • Steers: 11,396
  • Cows: 7,840
  • Heifers: 10,869.
  • Total: 35,218 (includes 50 calves)
