In this video, Dennis Howard - Munster Bovine Vet – gives advice to herd owners to ensure maximum results when selecting beef sires for dairy herds.
“Beef on dairy is all about striking a balance between calving ease, gestation length and the highest beef value calf.” he outlined.
“With calving ease, there is no compromising for the dairy cow; gestation length gets more important as the calving season and breeding season goes by.”
“You want to maximise your calf value, maximise the demand for your calves and importantly, maximise the value of the animal for the finisher,” he added.
‘The complete package’
Munster Bovine compiled a panel with proven, sires with high reliability at the start of the breeding season; it focuses on calving difficulty, gestation length and Dairy-Beef Index (DBI).
“It is very hard to find a bull with the complete package and high reliability,” he concluded.
