Name: Becky Hynes
Location: Aherla, Co.Cork
When did you start farming: I started farming when I was 5 helping Mom and Dad with calves and bedding down.
Enterprise: We have a dairy farm
About the farm: We have 150 cows, mostly pedigree Holstein but also a number of pedigree Jerseys. We have a grass-based system so cows graze from the start of February until late November, all spring calving. We keep all the heifer calves as we are expanding! It’s rather busy as there are several calves to be too be reared and heifers to be minded.
My favourite jobs: I help mom with all the calves and I help mom get all the calving pens ready. I also help mom & dad with milking for the rest of the year. I do the teat spraying and this year I learned too put in some clusters. I also mind the jersey show calves. I train them on the halter, make sure they are fed, washed & ready for shows.
What is your favourite part of farming life? It’s definitely calving time, seeing all the new babies being born. I also love showing. This year has been extra fun on the farm as we won Farmer of the year. We had so many great people visit and made so many new friends.
I was on Ear to the Ground recently and that was great fun having the film crew around for the day. We had a few a few film crews around this year. We also had a big open day & I showed The Bull Hayes and Isacc Boss around the farm and I also met Minister Michael Creed and his daughter. That was a great fun day!
Have you always wanted to farm? Yes, because it's great fun and I love helping my mom. My friend Eddie Barrett from the NCBC encouraged me to show calves this year and showed me how to train them too. I also got lots of help from Robert and Stephen Shannon with my calves. Farming is great fun and I get lots of encouragement.
Future Plans I hope to go on and study agriculture after secondary school. I also love helping my friend Alma Jordan with Agrikids anytime I meet her at Agri events. I love showing younger kids how to be safer on farms.
