An All-Ireland Suckler Cow and Calf Competition believed to be the first of its kind in the country will take centre stage at this year’s Bonniconlon Agricultural Show.
Earmarked to occur on Monday, August, 6th, 2018( Bank Holiday), some of Ireland’s top suckler pairings will come under the spotlight as part of a loose-penning competition sponsored by the Irish Charolais Cattle Society; Mayo-Sligo Livestock Mart and Dovea Genetics.
A prize-fund of €3,700 is set to be shared among those who secure the top fifteen places on the day, with €600 to be awarded to the first-prize winner, while the team that secures the final place will take home €100, respectively.
Promotion of the suckler section
Speaking to That’s Farming, Secretary of the Irish Charolais Cattle Society, Nevan McKiernan said:
“The main aim of this competition is to promote the Suckler cow and of course Charolais as a terminal sire. The suckler cow is of vital importance to the development and growth of the Charolais Breed in Ireland.”
“We hope that this competition will attract a tremendous showcase of suckler cows and calves. There is a great prize fund of €3,700 up for grabs, which should be a good incentive for suckler farmers to put their best cows on display.”
Those wishing to enter the competition must note the following:
- Best pen of two Suckler cows and their calves;
- Cows can be any breed;
- Calves must be sired by a Charolais (Charolais on their passport) and bred from the cows they are paired with (Cows and calves may be DNA'd for verification);
- Maximum of two entries/pens per exhibitor allowed.
All entries must be submitted to the Bonniconlon Agricultural Show Office, with an address at Carrareagh, Bonniconlon. Ballina. Co. Mayo or call 096-45111.
