830-kilometre tractor run planned for April

Extreme Tractor Runs – Kilkelly, Co. Mayo Ireland is in the process of organising one of its largest events to date.

A London to Mayo tractor run is being organised to raise funds for the Cancer Fund for Children’s Capital Appeal to build Daisy Lodge in Cong, Co. Mayo Ireland.

Daisy Lodge

Daisy Lodge is a short break centre for children with cancer who provide support with the whole family. Families have the opportunity to stay at the lodge for 3 or 4 days and enjoy the beautiful space and surroundings.

Each year, they provide short breaks for about 400 families but, unfortunately, there are space constraints. At present, there is only one such centre on the island in Newcastle, Co. Down.

A spokesperson for the lodge said: “For every one family we support in Ireland, there’s another seven that we can’t. We’ve made a decision to build another daisy lodge in Mayo in the beautiful village of Cong. It’s a stunning space, created specifically for the families.”

One of the users of the facility is Eimear Hardiman. Her daughter, Clodagh, was diagnosed with leukaemia at a young age. Her immune system is very weak due to her condition, so the family are limited on places they can go or people they can interact with.

“Daily life has changed, we have to screen every visitor. They have to be healthy for three days. They can’t have a cold, cough, sniffle rash, anything. We’re very confined to home.” she explained in a video.

“Being able to come away to a place that’s clean and a safe environment for her and her immune system is key.”

“Daisy Lodge for us is like heaven, it’s a seven-star hotel. You feel at home because all the other people you know staying there are under infection control, so they have to be very healthy.”

Tractor run

In order to build the new facility in Co. Mayo, €14.5 million is needed and the London2Mayo Tractor Run is hoping to help reach this target.

The tractor run will start in London, 5th April, 2020 and arrive in Kilkelly, Co. Mayo Ireland on April 11th. Tractors will be travel 833 kms, avoiding motorways, from London to Mayo.

Organisers have said that support and a welcome in each location would be appreciated.
