News has broken today in the Kilkenny People that 125 cattle have been seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB).
A Kilkenny farmer with a large outstanding tax bill is currently being investigated by the CAB, and it’s believed that the bill could now be in excess of €4 million.
The CAB, along with help from local Gardaí, seized the 125 cattle from Mr. Thomas McDonnell’s land today.
The Bureau, according to the Kilkenny People, started investigating Mr. McDonnell’s tax situation back in 2006, covering the years between 1991 and 2006.
In 2008, assessments showed that McDonnell supposedly owed €1.2 million before interest; the Kilkenny People state that ‘Mr McDonnell failed to discharge his tax liability and accordingly the Bureau commenced High Court Revenue proceedings for the collection of the unpaid taxes in November 2009’.
In May 2013, the CAB obtained judgement and has been seeking to collect the money since then. With interest, the figure has grown to over €4 million.Armed officials were reportedly at the scene, and roads in the area around McDonnell’s farm in Skeoughvosteen were closed off.
