Roundwood Livestock Limited, which is based in County Wicklow, has secured a contract with the Algerian Government to supply 12,000 live bulls and steers.
The next consignment is scheduled to depart Ireland in mid-April.
Welcoming the news, the Minister for Agriculture Food & Marine, said: “This is very welcome news in what are otherwise difficult times for beef farmers.”
“It is a big vote of confidence in the Irish cattle market by the Algerian Government and in the quality of Irish beef.”
He commended Dr Salman and his team at Roundwood for their efforts in developing this market opportunity.
“Irish farmers will no doubt welcome the opportunity to have another market open up for Irish livestock at this critical time.”
Certificates
In February a delegation from the DAFM visited Algeria and agreed with Algerian authorities a certificate for the export of cattle for slaughter from Ireland to Algeria with immediate effect.
This follows on from an agreement from last year on certificates for export of cattle for breeding and fattening.
