VIDEO: Calf prices ‘very similar’ to pre-Covid-19 restrictions

Carnew Mart facilitated the sale of calves last Wednesday (April 1st), in the region of 500 sheep on Thursday (April 2nd) and approximately 300 cattle on Saturday (April 4th).

Speaking following the sales, mart manager, David Quinn said: “While the system is certainly no replacement for the live auction system, there is a lot of work with it, it did work.”

“Prices were very similar to pre-Covid-19 restrictions for calves; sheep were a strong trade selling for up to €128 for hoggets and up to €140 for heavy cast ewes.”

He outlined that quality cattle generally sold from €2.00-€2.20/kg, while Hereford and Angus-types fetched €1.70-€1.90/kg.

This week

The mart is hoping to facilitate the sale of calves today (Monday, April 6th), sheep on Tuesday (April 7th) and cattle later this week. “Please keep in touch with the office if you have any requests or requirements and we will give you all the information.”

“Once again, thank you for all your co-operation during this very difficult time and give us a call if you need any assistance.” Quinn concluded.
