Driver said that store-type cows, especially Friesians, met with “a lively demand”.

Eric Driver said that trade was “very positive” at Tullow Mart's first cattle of 2020, which was held on Friday, January 9th.

Speaking following the general cattle sale, the manager said: “A smaller sale in numbers, but yet a very positive outlook for the store trade for the weeks ahead.”

Bullocks

Beef and forward-store bullocks sold from €600 up to €950 with the kg. “A noticeable demand for young store bullocks north of 550kg.” the manager explained.

Lighter, Hereford and Aberdeen-Angus entries, weighing from 350kgs upwards, pushed from €2.00-€2.10/kg, while continentals climbed to €2.10-€2.50/kg.

Some forward continental stores, in the 450kg to 530kg bracket, went under the hammer from €2.10-€2.45/kg.

Heifers

Beef heifers met with a “very lively trade” and made from €750 up to €€980 with the kg. Store Hereford and Aberdeen-Angus-types fetched €2.00-€2.15/kg.

“A noticeable demand for continental stores; [these made] from €2.15-€2.50/kg and especially for the 400kg-430kg stores.”

Cull cows

Friesian cull cows sold from €150 to €300 with the kg while continental lots ranged from €200 up to €650 over.

“A lively demand around the ring for the store-type cow, especially the store Friesian-type cow.” the mart manager added.

Calves

In the calf ring, continental bulls recorded prices from €250 up to €380 while continental heifers followed from €180 up to €270.

Export-type Friesian went under the hammer from €20 up to €55 with some strong calves making from €60 up to €120.

Hereford and Aberdeen-Angus bulls ranged from €140 up to €220 and Hereford and Aberdeen-Angus heifers clicked from €100-€210.
