“Variance still exists between the quality calves and the plainer-type lots” – Egan

The recent adverse weather conditions drew a larger entry of stock to Castlerea Mart on Thursday (October 10th), according to Brendan Egan – manager.

He noted that there was increased farmer activity, coupled with good export demand in the weanling rings this week.

Variance still exists between the quality calves and the plainer-type lots with quality the driving force behind the better prices obtained.”

He noted that trade for heifers was similar to previous weeks while the dry cow trade remained firm.

“Breeding stock has noticed increased numbers with renewed interest and cows with calves at foot topped out at €1,930.” the manager added.

Heifers:

  • LM - 405KGS - €980;

  • SI - 415KGS - €900;

  • AA - 420KGS - €890;

  • CH - 460KGS - €1065;

  • AA - 470KGS - €1030;

  • BB - 525KGS - €1360;

  • CH - 590KGS - €1265.

Dry cows:

  • LM - 805KGS - €1580;

  • LM - 945KGS - €1485;

  • AA - 855KGS - €1455;

  • LM - 855KGS - €1430;

  • AA - 895KGS - €1390;

  • HEX - 780KGS - €1260;

  • LM - 760KGS - €1350.

Suckler entries, calves and runners:

  • Cows with calves at foot made from €990 to €1930 for a Limousin cow with her Charolais heifer calf at foot;

  • Springers ranged from €940 to €1610/head.

Calves/runners:

Larger numbers on offer this week with runners making from €120 to €735 for continental lots.

Weanling bulls:

  • CH - 295KGS - €965;

  • CH - 230KGS - €800;

  • CH 0 295KGS - €795;

  • BBX - 335KGS - €1045;

  • CH - 345KGS - €1030;

  • CH - 315KGS - €940.

Weanling heifers:

Bullocks:

Some 230 bullocks went under the hammer on Monday (October 7th), with entries averaging €474 over the kg. “Trade and prices were similar to last week with a good attendance of buyers,” Egan said.
