A Co Clare farmer fetched €16,500 for one of his prize limousin heifers yesterday in Kilkenny. The sale was just one of many at the Irish Limousin Cattle Society's special Elite Sale event.
The sale was achieved after an intense bidding war, eventually coming to a rewarding conclusion for breeder John McInerney of Clonmoney West, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co Clare. His heifer, Drummin J-Lo is in calf for three and a half months and won the Supreme Beef Interbreed Championship at the Munster Agricultural Society Show in Munster last June.
McInerney's day got even better when another of his herd was sold for €10,500 just a few lots later, meaning he would be heading back the Banner county with at least €27,000.
Other sales that took place on the day in Cillín Hill included A and P Kelly Ltd of Moate, Co Westmeath making €8,600 from one of its heifers, Darragh O'Meara from Roo West, Ardnacrusha, Co Clare got €8,000 for one of his heifers.
At the other end of the scale Edward Tynan of Beechill Farm, Co Laois saw one of his heifers sold for €3,100, and Michael Sexton of Aheybridge, Co Clare get €4,000 for his five star cattle.
