Breeding heifers reach €2,280 at Balla

Three rings were in operation at Balla Mart on Saturday (August 1st), to accommodate for another large entry of cattle.

A mart spokesperson reported that numbers are remained “very big for the time of year, as was the average price” which was up on the previous sale.

“There has not been a sale at Balla during this weekend for the last 26 years but with Covid and the time lost, three rings were in operation to handle the increased numbers.”

They noted that there was “great” interest in the mart’s online bidding facilities, with some forty buyers availing of this service for this particular sale.

Bullocks

The spokesperson reported that the sale attracted over 400 bullocks, with those weighing between 300-400kgs averaging €2.21/kg.

Stores 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.30/kg, while heavier bullocks averaged €2.18/kg – a 760kg – LMX – €1,790 or €2.36/kg.

Heifers

“A fine sale of heifers with over 260 booked. It was a very good trade with lots of online bids.”

Entries up to 400 kg averaged €2.38/kg, while those 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.36/kg.

500kg+ lots averaged €2.26/kg – a BBX – 700kg – €2,280 or 3.26/kg.

Cull cows and suckler pairs

Dry cows averaged €1.77/kg, the sale-topper being a six-year-old CH cow, which sold for €1,720.

In the suckler ring, an 11-year-old LMX cow with a bull calf at foot topped out at €1,490.

Bull weanlings

“In the bull weanlings, there was a lot of light stock that averaged from €2.21-2.58/kg – a LMX made E970 or €2.31/kg.” the spokesperson concluded.
