There was a complete clearance and an approved trade for all sorts of sheep at Baltinglass Mart on Saturday.
Lighter lambs made in the region €2-€2.15/kg; 30kg made €60-€70, depending on the quality. Store and fat ewes made for €61- €110, with a similar trade to the previous week.
Speaking to That’s Farming, Joe Kinsella, Manager of Baltinglass Mart said:
“The sale was not as big as the week before, but there was a good offering. The heavier lambs were back up to what they were at two weeks ago. The top price was €115 for 55kgs and in that category from 50-60kg they were making from €104-€115, depending on the flesh cover.”
“The smaller weight lambs from 45-50kg were making €95-€105. The types at €105 were Charollais well-fleshed lambs. There is good demand for store lambs and the farmers that are selling lambs are replacing them. There is a huge demand for those forward-type store lambs between 37-41kg; Cheviot or Suffolk-Cross.” Joe added.
Wether and Ram Lambs
Quality beef and stores, both heifers and bullocks were in strong demand at the recent cattle sale.
“The cattle sale went well and forward cattle were the best sellers. 550kg cattle are making up to €1120-€1250, depending on the quality. Heavy Limousin bulls made from €2-€2.20/kg.” Joe said.
