Leanne Rowlette, is a young farmer’s daughter from Dromore West in Co. Sligo and now a music star in her own right.
You may remember the 12-year-old from a few months ago, when she released a cover of “go Lassie go”, in honour of her late mother, who died giving birth to her sibling, when Leanne was seven. The teenager went viral with her version of the classic tune in her father’s tractor, in a touching tribute to her mother.
Her father Sean was the man behind the idea and the one who recorded Leanne singing in the tractor. The family, due to the success of the cover, have now released a CD, with Leanne’s cover of the hit as well as two other bonus tracks!
“Leannes mother died when she was seven, giving birth to our fourth child. I was trying to do things with them(the kids) to get them over it. I started bringing them to singing lessons in Ballina...She would be singing away in the car on the way home” said Sean.
“Then I was out on the tractor one of the days, and took the video of her, while we were rolling the field” Sean added.
From there the video went viral, with every agricultural forum in the country picking up on the wonderful cover. The video, has now received over 800,000 views, making Leanne an overnight internet sensation.
“My messenger was inundated with messages to get it recorded, so I said I better get it recorded” he said.
Next Sean and his daughter recorded a video, by a local lake, with Leanne singing the hit and from there it was decided a CD should be made. The family were then put in touch with the right people, and from there the CD was put into production. The CD includes the hit ‘Go Lassie Go’, as well as ‘Hard Times’ and ‘A girl with a fishing rod”.
“She would be a big fan of Lisa McHugh’s” Sean said of Leanne’s song choices.
When asked whether we had a future country music star on our hands, Sean insisted they were in no rush and said he wanted Leanne to enjoy her childhood first.
“There’s a few there looking yet (agents)... but she’s only 12-years old, so I’m not going to panic yet” said Sean.
The CD has been out since last Friday and Sean says he is now nearly out of stock already. The CD was picked up by irishmusic.co.uk, with 100 ordered already and a further order for after Christmas.
“They have over 250,000 followers. They reckon they are going to sell a world of CD’s for us” he said
“I went and ordered 350 CD’s last Friday and there is easily 80% of them gone...A lot of the shops are down to three and four again” he added.
“I’m going to have to try and get more” he stated.
The CD can be purchased in local stores within Connacht, in towns such as Charlestown, Colooney, Tobbercurry, Headford, Ballosadare, Dromore West, Ballina and many more areas. As mentioned above it can also be obtained on www.irishmusic,co.uk. It can be purchased for €8, with €1 of each sale going to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Sligo University Hospital, something close to the Rowlette’s hearts. This is the place, where Leanne’s sister and mother were treated and where Leanne’s mother died unexpectedly.
