Wednesday the 11th of October saw the public auction of a 100 acre piece of land, previously used for fattening, and a derelict residence, take place.
The auction was held at Cooneys Hotel in Ballymahon Co.Longford and was run by Murtagh Brothers auctioneers. Auctioneer on the day was Paul Murtagh and the crowds gathered early to try their hand at obtaining this land.
The bidding began at just at €520,000. From here, the bidding quickly increased by €20,000 with each bid. The highest bid came up to €620,000, which upon deliberation was not accepted by the vendor. It quickly came down to two bidders trying to win the property, with one bidder at the front of the room and one at the back in direct competition.
Once the bidding reached €650,000, the bids increased by just €10,000 a time as the action began to slow down. Finally the highest bid on the day was €720,000, though it was not accepted straight away. Deliberations took place between the auctioneer and the vendor, before the property was offered one final time.
There was to be no more money though, as the property was sold to the highest bidder, a Roscommon man, for a cool price of €720,000.
