The Mercosur deal between the EU member states and members of the South American Mercosur countries is approaching confirmation, with a 70,000tonne beef quota offered. This means that access will be given to over 70,000 tonnes of beef from Mercosur countries such as Brazil and Argentina, but is it a good idea?
We asked, and you delivered your verdict, read the results in full below!
The first question posed, was if our followers felt the proposed Mercosur deal was a good idea. The resounding opinion was No, with 94% voting that they feel it is a step in the wrong direction. As well as that, 94% of followers felt it would badly affect prices on Irish beef in the future.
Next up, we asked what our followers felt would be the worst affected by the deal. The majority 56% of voters, said that they felt prices would be worst hit, while 31% answered smaller farmers.
Finally, 94% of all voters also voted that they felt any proposed deal if approved, would see Mercosur regions not being held to the same high standards as we are. If this should be true, it would be dreadfully unfair.
