That’s Farming Journalist Catherina Cunnane interviewed Dora Kazmierak, a photographer, who has conducted a rather intriguing project on Irish Livestock Marts.

Dora Kazmierak, is a native of Warsaw, Poland, but it currently resident in Blackrock Co. Dublin.

‘Studying photography encourages me to travel to unusual places and take photos for my college project. It also gives me the opportunity to meet different people of various ages, interests, lifestyles and professions.’ Dora explained.

Dora was ‘fortunate’ to meet the Dublin-based poet, Louis Hemmings, who was on a long writing retreat, near Roscrea. Catherina also interviewed Louis recently, to receive an insight into his source of inspiration for writing rural poems. See here and here

‘He invited me to the Co-op Sheep Livestock Auction, at Roscrea, in February of this year. He was writing rural-interest poems about the countryside and farmers and knew about my assignment on ‘People and Places’, so when he discovered the Mart, he thought we should go there together.’

Her main objective was to capture a sense of the place.

‘In a documentary project like this, it was important to experiment with different lighting conditions, angles of viewing, etc. I wanted to show the place, as it was when I was there. Also I was an observer, who steps back and watches all the Mart activities. Looking from a distance helped me to spot patterns. It taught me about the flow of the place: sheep being unloaded, then being separated into pens, and finally entering the auction ring.’ She continued.

Dora added ‘The farming people who I met at the mart were lovely. I enjoyed their interest, like when they were asking what the purpose of my photography was. I think that honest an answer makes people more comfortable around the camera. I also like it because it starts the conversation. This exchange often opens my eyes to how others perceive a place very familiar to them. For example, not everyone comes to the Mart to buy and sell, as I thought previously. Some people come here for pure pleasure of being in vibrant place and chatting with friends. I really enjoyed this totally new experience. It's actually quite captivating to watch the sheep moving around the place, and to listen auctioneer's fast-paced bid taking.’

Dora excitedly awaits her return back to the mart, with full intentions of her next visit to entail an Irish Limousin Cattle Society Sale!
