Tullamore Mart was a hive of activity on Saturday 28th October last as buyers gathered from all corners of the country, Northern Ireland and the U.K. for the annual Irish Aubrac Society pre-selected show and sale.
The leading lady of the day, the overall champion Ballintra Larissa hailed from the herd of well-known Donegal based breeder John Walsh of Rockhill Aubracs.
The hammer hit at €3,200 for Larissa a DPZ daughter, described as a “very complete heifer”, with a replacement index of €136 and a terminal index of €124.
Following hot on her heels, another DPZ heifer Ballintra Kaye, with a replacement index of €136 and a terminal index of €124was acquired for €3,000 by Mr. Walsh.
Donegal’s John Walsh returned to the ringside and claimed the Reserve Champion title.
Ballintra Lea, described as a “heifer with a lot of style” a granddaughter of Lavande and full sister to Roussell, AI bull sold for a respectable €2,800.
Lea boasts a replacement index of €136 and a terminal index of €130 and carries numerous four and five stars down through the catalogue.
Hazelwood Lola, a daughter of Johnstown Harry 6014 daughter described as being “a complete Aubrac” offered for sale by William Walsh, Ballintra, Co. Donegal fetched €2,550, boasting a replacement index of €184 and a terminal index of €163.
It continued to be a successful day for the Donegal breeders as William Walsh sought €2,200 for Hazelwood Lona, a Johnstown Harry 6014 daughter.
Described as being “a heifer with a lot of old bloodlines” Lona has a replacement index of €185 and a terminal index of €131.
€2,100 was the price of Johnstown Lauren 1489, a highly rated heifer with a replacement value of €173, an Invincible daughter that was bred by Francis Donohoe and offered by sale by Shane and Joanne Bowers, Westmeath.
Laois’ Joseph Muldowney offered Portarlington Libby, a Dec-15 born Butlersgift Frank daughter for sale and garnered the attention of a Westmeath breeder at €1,550.
Shrubbywood Karesi, a Dec-15 Johnstown Ian 1144 daughter with a replacement index of €141 and a terminal index of €146 sold for €1,500 by the Bowers.
Five-star Shrubbywood Kitti scanned in-calf to Johnstown Ian 1144, due on 20th February 2018 from the herd of Shane and Joanne Bowers, Coole, Co. Westmeath sold for €2,600.
The Bowers secured €2,450 for Shrubbywood Kari, a Johnstown Glen 944 daughter scanned in-calf to Johnstown Ian 1144 and due to calve on 05th March 2018.
They also took home €2,050 for Shrubbywood Kamille, a heifer in-calve to Johnstown Ian, due to calve down on 25th February 2018.
James Ryan, Co. Limerick sold Houndswood Kathleen, a DPZ daughter with a replacement index of €167 and a terminal index of €127 in-calf to Bison since 10th March 2017 for €2,600.
James Ryan also sold Miegevie 3933, a French import born in March-2015 and a daughter of Reinou in-calf to a stock-bull and due the end of December for €1,800.
Mr. Ryan sold another French import Laguiole 3955 an Evian daughter, Ai’d to Consensuel on 12th March 2017 for €1,850, purchased by a Cornwall farmer.
Cow and Calves
Johnstown, Collinstown, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath breeder Francis Donohoe sold cow and calf pairing Johnstown Holly 2816, an Equateur daughter with her May 2017 born heifer calf Johnstown Maria for €3,050.
Mr. Donohoe returned to offer yet another cow and calf pairing, this time being Johnstown Jennifer 841, a Johnstown Harry 8145 daughter with a replacement index of €131 and her March-2017 born Invincible son secured €2,400.
Breeding females- Young heifers, heifer Weanling and Yearlings Heifers
Standing third in her class, a Johnstown Harry 6014 daughter Hazelwood Mandy, a granddaughter of Auoa, Tullamore Champion 2006 from William Walsh’s herd, weighing 265kg was acquired for €1,800.
€1,550 secured Laheen Meave, a February-2017 born Johnstown Enda 800 daughter, with a replacement index of €152 and a terminal index of €142.
Gerard Ward, Co. Monaghan acquired €1,100 for Drumleek Molly, a March-2017 born daughter of Drumleek Jack, with a replacement index of €117 and a balancing terminal index of €116.
The hammer hit at the same four-digit figure for Laheen May, a Johnstown Enda 800 daughter with a replacement index of €108 from James Waugh’s herd based in Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal
The hammer fell at €1,000 for four-star Ballintra Madonna with a replacement index of €134, John Walsh’s heifer bred by Johnstown Harry 6014 and a daughter of Eve, 2010 Tullamore Champion.
Portarlington Molly, with a replacement index of €155 from the herd of Joseph Muldowney, Laois sold for a sum of €1,000.
Tuam, Co. Galway based breeders Sonny and Margaret Jennings sold their April-16 Ballintra Ike daughter Cahegal Linda, with a replacement index of €154 for a notable €1,750.
Kevin O’Brien’s Turloughmore Lucky One, a Dolby daughter born in June-16 with a replacement index of €129 was sold for €1,750.
Eamon Rigeny, Brocca, Clonaslee, Co. Laois offered Garryheather Libia, a March-2016 bon heifer carrying a replacement index of €158 for €1,700.
Hazelwood Lacey an April-2016 Caporal daughter, described as bring a heifer with “strong bloodlines” drummed up €1,600 for Donegal’s William Walsh.
Ardskeabeg Lizzy sold for €1,580, another Calverstown Ireland daughter born in Feb-2016 from Stephen Canavan’s herd.
Slaneymill Lynn 618 offered by the Hanbidge family in Co. Wicklow acquired €1,550, a heifer born in May-2016 with a replacement index of €95 and a terminal index of €119.
The same money bought Cairn Hill Loraine, Bernard Casey’s May-16 born Cain Hill Gully daughter with a replacement value of €133.
De Buitlier Lucinda, a Balinclea Harry daughter born in March-2016, with a replacement index of €154 from Francis Butler’s herd sold for the same figure.
Douglas and Alfred Hanbidge, Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow took home €1,500 for Slaneymill Lynn 629, their Feb-2016 born Dreylands Poupeill daughter.
Turloughmore Lidia 2, a DPZ daughter born in October 2016 was purchased for €1,500.
William Walsh’s Hazelwood Lela, a Sept-16 born Johnstown Harry 6014 daughter, with her dam being a full sister to Urbano AI bull carrying a replacement index of €161 sold for €1,450.
Slaneymill Lynn 685 was sought for the same figure, an April-16 born heifer, bred by Dreylands Poupeill.
A Ballinclea Festival daughter Slaneymill Lynn 877, with a replacement index of €132 born in January 2016 sold for the same figure.
€1,450 was also the price of Ardskeabeg Laura, a Jan-16 born Calverstown Ireland daughter with a replacement index of €163 and she was sold by Stephen Canavan, Galway.
Once again the €1,450 figure hit and Cahergal Lilly, Sonny and Margaret Jennings’ sold their April-2016 Ballintra Ike heifer with a replacement index of €105.
A Calverstown Ireland daughter, from Stephen Canavan’s herd in Tuam, Co. Galway, Ardskeabeg Lotto, born in March-2016 with a replacement index of €124 sold for €1,400.
€1,300 for Bernard Casey’s Cairn Hill Louise 369, a Carricknahorna Edgar daughter born in Sept-2016, with a replacement index of €130.
The Longford breeder also took home the same price for Cairn Hill Lucy, born in July 2016, replacement value of €115 and also a daughter of Carricknahorna Edgar.
Mr. Casey did the same business for the third time in a row and sought the golden figure for Cairn Hill Louise, a May-2016 born Cairn Hill Gully daughter with a replacement index of €130.
Donal Quinlan, Cullenwaine, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary sold Cullenwaine Lola, a Duches heifer born in Sept-2016 for €1,350.
At €1,250, Hazelwood Mae, a March-2017 heifer bred by Johnstown Harry 6014 was acquired from William Walsh’s herd.
At €1,250 Casey sold Cairn Hill Lisa, another Cairn Hill Gully daughter born in June with a replacement index of €123.
Cairnhill Louise 370, a Cairn Hill Gully daughter born in September-2016 fetched €1,200 for Bernard Casey, Longford.
Clongath Linda, a Jan-16 born heifer from Joseph Muldowney’s herd, Offaly was acquired for €1,200.
For €3050, Francis Butler sold De Buitlier Lenny, a son of Balinclea Harry, born in March 2016 with a replacement index of €151 and a terminal index of €112.
Kevin O’Brien, Turloughmore, Co. Galway took home €3,000 for Turloughmore Lothar, a November-2016 born sold of Turloughmore Jake.
Lothar boasts a replacement index of €166 and a terminal index of €141.
Culvin Streete, Co. Westmeath breeder Olive Butler acquired €2,000 for De Buitlier Louie, a Balinclea Harry son born in September 2016, with a replacement index of €150 and a terminal index of €117.
James Ryan, Co. Limerick’s bull Tipperary Leo 307 exchanged hands with a Laois- farmer for €2,100.

Irish Aubrac Society
Irish Aubrac Society was established in 1998, following the arrival of Aubrac genetics into Ireland into Cork in 1992, the society now counts over 170 members.
The society will celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2018.
