Ennis: Top call of €2,820 in ‘strong’ trade

Ennis Mart – Cattle Prices – 24-01-2023

According to a spokesperson for Ennis Mart, just under 700 lots – a larger entry than the previous week – came under the hammer at its most recent sale on Tuesday, January 24th, 2023.

They reported that “a strong” trade prevailed “all around” at Tuesday’s sale, which saw prices peak at €2,820 in the suckler ring.

They noted that in-calf lots hit €2,020, while elsewhere, in the weanling ring, bulls met with “a strong trade” on the back of demand from shippers and farmers, who were “very active”.

The spokesperson remarked: “Heifers were a very strong trade with a few exceptional prices, and over €5.00/kg was achieved in this ring.”

“There were 25 calves available, and these met with a strong trade, but lots on offer were either Aberdeen Angus-types or continentals.”

“The continentals topped out at €570, and an Aberdeen Angus hit €340. All these calves were at least 3-weeks-old, and were all well cared for,” the spokesperson added.

Last week’s cattle prices

According to a spokesperson for Ennis Mart, some 546 lots, including 25 calves, came under the hammer at its general cattle sale on Tuesday, January 17th, 2023.

They reported that a “strong” trade prevailed for bull and heifer weanlings, but “they were no dearer than last week overall”.

“There were, however, some very fancy prices for some quality lots, with a bit more bite in the heifer ring.”

“Calves made to €420 on occasions, while a mixed run of suckler stock, which were mostly in-calf lots, made to €1,650 and pairs topped out at €1,820,” the spokesperson added.
