Cattle up €30-€50/hd in Carnew – Quinn

Farming News/Mart Reports on That’s Farming – Carnew Livestock Mart – Cattle Prices – 26-08-2023

According to David Quinn of Carnew Mart, cattle improved by €30-€50/head at its most recent cattle sale on Saturday, August 26th, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

The mart manager reported that some 790 cattle and 50 calves and runners crossed the scales at Saturday’s sale.

He reported a “very lively sale with many farmers, factory buyers and specialist feeders available to buy both beef and store cattle on offer”.

“This led to a full clearance with a notable bite in the trade.”

“Aidan Jones, Pallas, Gorey, County Wexford kindly donated a HEX bullock with all proceeds going towards North Wexford Hospice – 490kg at €1,600 – €3.27/kg – bought by Mr John Kelly,” he added.

Interview with David Quinn

Previously, we profiled David Quinn of Carnew Mart, as part of our popular Mart Focus series, which reads as follows:

In 1997, David Quinn, from Carnew, County Wicklow, took over the running and management of Carnew Mart, a family-run business.

He farms a small beef enterprise on the Wicklow/Wexford border and is married to Eilish with their four children: Jack (25), Julie (22), Adam (19), and Robert (15).

“My grandparents would have started it as a sheep mart in the 1950s and the existing mart site in the mid-1960s. I would have started auctioneering when I was eighteen in 1988”, David Quinn told That’s Farming.

“During the 1970s and 1980s, we had marts every day of the week in different locations; we had a mart in Kilkenny and Wexford.”

“My grandfather started selling sheep in the grain yard in the 1950s. I think there were two marts in Carnew operating for a couple of years, which would be unusual in one small town,” he added.
