A smaller number of cattle went under the hammer at Balla Mart, however; in general, the trade remained firm for categories presented for sale, despite the adverse weather conditions. Approximately 700 lots passed through the three rings in operation, according to the mart.
Bullocks 400kg made up to €810 with the weight this week and they averaged 2.54/kg. Meanwhile, quality heavier bullocks 600kg-700kg plus were scarce this week and made 2.52/kg. Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged 2.66/kg and the best a 345kg Charolais born April '17 made 1,155.00 (or 3.35/kg).
Bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged 2.35/kg; a 455kg CHX born March-2017 hit €1,265 (or 2.78 /kg), while bullocks 500kg plus averaged 2.24/kg. A 680kg CHX bullock born March 16 was acquired for 1,605.00 euro (925 euro with the weight).

In generalheifers up to 400 kg averaged 2.60 Euro/ kg. The best store this week, a March-2017 born 360kg BBX heifer sold for E1,125.00(E3.13 /kg). Heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged 2.37/kg with the weight; the best a 495kg LMX heifer born July-2016 made E1,500.00 (3.03/kg). Heifers 500kg plus averaged 2.20/kg; the best was a 640kg CHX which sold for E1,490.00.

A smaller entry of culls cows in ring-three this week, with just over fifty dry cows passing through the ring. Some types were dearer than the previous week, due to supply and demand.
Continental factory-fit culls met with a very lively demand, while quality stores for long-term feeding purposes once again made up to €450- €600 over the weight. The leading dry cow hit €1,960 which was paid for a 910kg CHX cow born in 2008.
A CHX 735kg born in 2001 sold for €1,330, while another CHX born in 2013 weighing 715kg sold for €1,480. A 645kg AAX made €1,170, while light FR cull cows for long-term feeding purposes made in the region of €1.20-€1.30/kg, depending on the quality. One FR hit the scales at 525kg and was sold for €700, while another FR weighing 510kg left the ring unsold at €635.
In the sucklers, the best an April-2015 born CHX cow with January-20018 bull calf at foot fetched E1,630.00. There was a steady demand across the board for springers once again this week and in cases, the price for cull cows surpassed that of springers.
There was a smaller sale of weanlings this Saturday due to the special entry last week, however, bulls 200 to 350kg averaged E2.55/kg, while heavier lots 350- 450kg averaged out at E2.63/kg. The heaviest lots presented for sale averaged 2.62/kg. A bull 450kg born April-2017 made E1,235.00 (E785 with the weight).
